Wanderlust

Another month goes by, another impromptu exhibition commences! Sometimes I don’t even know how this happens so quickly and I manage to prepare all the work, take it to the framers, organise art certificates, update my bio, create an artist statement, a consignment of the work, deliver the artwork, email all my subscribers and market it all on social media. There is allot that goes into an exhibition but often I find myself on autopilot, just to get the job done. I feel like I've given myself whiplash from the sheer speed of it all!

On the plus side, when an exhibition occurs so quickly I don’t have the opportunity to second guess myself or to question the art. It allows me to work instinctively. I am really pleased with this selection of etchings for my petite solo exhibition Wanderlust. The majority of pieces are new to my portfolio and there are a couple which aren’t new but conceptually they hang harmoniously in this exhibition.

Wanderlust - artist statement

Wanderlust is an exhibition that has evolved from a deep yearning and desire to travel. As a first-generation child of Polish migrants, a huge part of my identity stems from going back to my Polish homeland and connecting to the culture through experiences and memories. Travelling to countries nearby including Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal and Czech Republic have also been huge contributors in inspiring that sense of connection. Culture and European history has helped me weave and piece together my own identity, as I gain an understanding of my heritage and sense of belonging. My last memory of travelling was back in 2019 when I completed an artist residency on the coast of Spain, just north of Barcelona. I spent quite allot of time between Spain and Italy and have grown ever fond of its beautiful architecture and landscape. The last couple years, living with uncertainty, I’ve clutched onto those distant memories and moments in time, yearning to go back. These delicately hand-painted etchings reflect on personal romanticised and fictional memories, albeit reimagined memories, as I piece together moments from the past.
