Romantic Shoot
With the launch of my Romantic Jewellery Collection around the corner, I have been working hard behind the scenes on a photoshoot which I hope delivers a dreamy and romantic aesthetic. I started this concept over 6 months ago when I began experimenting with new artworks and designs. I found the introduction of blues, pinks and purple an outlet for my imagination and an opportunity to experiment. These hues were relaxing and evocative, sparking allot of new inspiration which you may have seen on my recent social media posts. I have even had a few new commissions lately inspired by this new colour palette and compositions.
The Romantic Collection primarily consists of earrings and a few brooches. They are whimsical and nostalgic, also introducing pearls as an added element in the designs. The pearls have been inspired by the famous oil painting by Johannes Vermeer - ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’. Vermeer was a master for painting the light and he beautifully captures it in her face and the pearl. I really resonated with the film that came out in 2003 and features Scarlett Johansson. The vulnerability and the emotions that came out of this film were quite moving. I remember seeing this in the cinema, dreaming of one day wearing pearl earrings on my wedding (as silly and cliche as that might sound!). I was so thrilled to find the most perfect baroque pearl earrings by an Australia designer. I wore them with a long simple white dress when I got married in 2021.
All of my jewellery pieces are made from recycled aluminium and each one features digitally printed aluminium of my artwork. As a printmaker, specialising in traditional etching, I am drawn to metal as a material. I use aluminium because it is so light weight, making it easy to wear, versatile and travel-friendly. I cut each aluminium piece by hand and then smooth the edges using a file and sand paper. I love rounding the edges of the metal because it makes the earrings and brooches look like 'miniature etchings' and echoes my printing process. For all of my jewellery pieces, I use sterling silver findings which are also nickel free.
This jewellery collection will launch at the start of September in conjunction with my group exhibition ‘Blurring the Lines’ which opens on the 5th of September at Impress Printmaking Gallery, Brisbane.
