Our Magic Beach
The beach has always been an anchor for me — perhaps ironically, given that nothing about the ocean ever truly stays the same.
The tide comes and goes, the waves reshape the shoreline, and the landscape is constantly changing. Yet there is something about the salty air, the sound of the water and the feeling of sand beneath my feet that has always made me feel grounded. It is a place I return to, both physically and in my memories.
Hinsby Beach is the beach of my childhood. It is where I spent long summer days playing with friends who, many years later, are still some of the people I hold closest. It is a place filled with the kind of memories that become woven into who we are — sun-warmed skin, sandy feet, adventures that seemed endless and the feeling that summer would last forever.
Now, as a mother, I find myself looking at the beach differently. I see it not only through my own childhood memories, but through the eyes of my children. I want to share that sense of wonder with them — to watch them discover shells, chase waves, build sandcastles and create their own little stories by the sea. And perhaps, one day, they will bring their own children there too.
It was this love of the ocean, memory and childhood that inspired Our Magic Beach.
I first created the etching for my son’s nursery. I wanted to make something that felt elegant and timeless, but also a little magical — an artwork that could belong in a child’s room without feeling overly childish. Something they could grow alongside and, hopefully, treasure long after those early years had passed.
At the heart of the artwork is a curious mermaid, surrounded by whales, dolphins, stingrays and sea turtles. Together they create an underwater world filled with possibility — a place where imagination can wander and stories can unfold. For me, it is a celebration of childhood curiosity, adventure and the magic of the natural world.
Our Magic Beach is created from my original hand-drawn artwork and traditionally printed as a limited edition etching. Each print is then finished by hand, with delicate details painted in acrylic and watercolour, alongside touches of gold and silver pigment. Because every piece is individually finished, each etching carries its own subtle variations and character.
The accompanying Our Magic Beach tote bag brings the artwork into everyday life — a little piece of the sea to carry with you, whether you are heading to the beach, packing for an adventure or simply carrying a little bit of childhood magic along the way.
Ultimately, Our Magic Beach is about more than the ocean. It is about belonging, memory and the places that hold a piece of us. It is about the childhood we remember, the childhood we hope to create for our own children, and the beautiful possibility of passing those memories down.
A little piece of the beach.
A little piece of childhood.
A little bit of magic to keep forever.
