'Between Places' Exhibition and Catalogue

A few months in the making, I am finally excited to present 'Between Places' - an exhibition about place by Kate Piekutowski, Maria Emilia Sauri and Lucille Korponay. The genesis of this exhibition came about when three genuinely passionate artists came together to discuss ideas and simply chat about art. We soon realised that there was a connection between us and that although our styles, techniques and concepts were different, we were all connected by place.

The exhibition is open for viewing from today (Thursday 17th of June) until the 27th of June at the Impress Gallery and Studio in Brisbane. I really love this space and am quite drawn to it's architecture and design. The building used to be an old Sub Station in Brisbane until it was later on converted into a studio. Impress Studio is an artist run printmaking facility which is where I print and process most of my etchings. It is also a fantastic place to connect and meet other artists.

Artist Statement

Between places explores different identifications with Place. Maria Emilia, Lucille and Kate draw on their experience of belonging, moving the line that defines Place and how we live it, building it as a movable and dynamic construction, enriched by the subjective.

Migrating to Australia 10 years ago, Maria Emilia’s work focuses on the connections between her home in Australia and her original home Argentina. Steaming from the idea of the night sky as a common ground, Maria Emilia builds on physical places that exist in between by definition and uses them to illustrate the complexity of belonging and connection. From portals and thresholds to the evocation of invisible places as a memory or a promise, Maria Emilia work acknowledges the emotional and the ambiguous in the idea of Place.

Through the medium of etching, Kate Piekutowski explores her cultural identity and connection to places, between Australia and her Polish Homeland. She draws inspiration from the past, her ancestors and whimsical folkloric narratives. This body of work responds to memories, both found, collected and reimagined, as she takes the audience on a personal journey. Memories of travel and most recently travelling through Europe in 2019 has influenced the work, particularly through architecture. Torn between two worlds, Kate Piekutowski uses motifs and designs that showcase two separate yet entwining cultures and landscapes.

Lucille’s work is a meditation on the echos of cultural identity, colonization and emigration evidenced in the introduced plant life species that have established themselves in the area where she lives. Being of mixed race, a melange of Caucasianess, and with no strong ties to cultural ancestry the artist has sought to create their own heirloom traditions using motifs found in traditional Hungarian folk art motifs. The artist has sought to create a new interpretation of these traditions to reference the world around her and create identity. Through this process, the artist feels a sense of otherness and closeness within the Australian landscape, yet muses that many naturalised weeds have become so common and pervasive that they are now identified as of that place, uniquely Brisbane. Contrasted against this suburban landscape are the native bird species that have found ways to adapt themselves and become prolific. Musing upon the annoyance suffered by suburban gardeners because of bush turkeys, the disgust incited by urban ibis populations, or the sadness that other bird species have been pushed out by the noisy miner, the artist has sought to highlight these species, to congratulate them for being successful. These creatures have adapted themselves and forged a new identity within the changed Australian (Brisbane) landscape.
